Thursday, May 10 General Meeting Information

U Street Neighborhood Association will have its general meeting on May 10, 2012 at the Third District Pollce Station community room at 7 pm.  DDOT will give updates on the U Street streetscape.  The office of Planning will be providing an overview of the PUD process.  JBG will be providing updates and describe the variances they are requesting for the project at Florida/8th Street.  Hiba Abdallah will be presenting on a facility planned to be built at 9th/S St NW for individuals aging out of the foster care system.  Also Zahir Rahimi (owner of Mila 2015 14th St) will describe his desire to change this clothing store to a restaurant.  We will also be discussing the U Street Neighborhood Harrison Recreation Center film series starting in May.

On Thursday, August 14, 2009, at 7 pm, the U Street Neighborhood Association held its regular meeting at Source, 1835 14th Street, NW.  Topics included updates on the Dog Days community festival, updates on ABRA licensing changes, and other committee reports.

  • Bryan thanked everyone for their help at the U Street Festival during Dog Days.  It was a great event to build awareness for the U Street Neighborhood Association.  Over 150 raffle prizes were sold and new members joined.
  • There are new U Street Neighborhood Association t-shirts available to purchase.  This is a great way to build awareness for the U Street Neighborhood Association.
Committee Business Reports and Discussion
 
  • At recent PSA meetings, there has been an effort to get more officers in our PSA.
  • A discussion was held about having police officers attend a meeting for 30 minutes prior to each monthly U Street Neighborhood Association meeting.

  • There are currently 207 members.  There has been an increase in 8 members since the July meeting.
  • During Dog Days, there were 23 sign ups to participate in the Friends of Harrison Recreation Center committee.  The focus of the committee will be to address the physical needs of the space with the hopes of fund raising and having the DC government conduct repairs.  A landscape architect will be invited to a future meeting to discuss ideas for landscape improvements.
  • New, permanent curbs have been installed at the intersection of 15h and W Streets to address the dangerous intersection where there was a recent pedestrian fatality.

  • Update on Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) on Class C Restaurant (CR) Standards Hearing: ABRA held a hearing on restaurant standards and food sales requirements.  ABRA has considered imposing different tiers of fines for CR establishments that do not meet their requirements of 40% food sales as a percentage of total sales: establishments with 25% - 40% would have a reasonable fine, while 0% - 25% would have a more serious fine and the establishment would be encouraged to change their license.  ABRA has also considered a "Cafe" license that would be somewhere between CR and CT license restrictions.  This dialogue should continue.
  • Update on District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Valet Parking Regulations: There are two permit types that have been accepted and valet companies are now being trained on the permit options.  One option would require all vehicles to be off street and in private space.  The second option would be a special event permit that would enable valet parking to be in public space.
  • 14th Street Bakery & Wine Bar: A voluntary agreement is being worked on for this establishment.  The concept is to have a bakery in the basement, and a wine bar with food served on the first and second floors.  Lunch and dinner would served.
  • Cork Market: A voluntary agreement is being worked on for this establishment.  The concept is a market and wine bar by the same owners as Cork.  It is scheduled to open this Fall.
  • DC MUD recently noted that the planned development of vacant lots behind the Lincoln Theatre has been postponed indefinitely.
  • Phil asked Sheryl to keep tabs on the First African New Church.  Peter Raia said that Sorg has advised that they paid too much for the land and they cannot afford to develop the property at this time, but they do not want to sell the property in this market.
  • The Greater U Street Historic District signs will be installed at some point in the near future.
Community Presentations
  • ANC 2F Arts Overlay Committee: Andrea Doughty presented the ANC2F Arts Overlay Committee findings.  Details can be found at www.anc2f.org/arts 
  • TLG Parking: Tihisha Girmai of District Valet (202) 538-4407 announced that he is operating a secure surface parking lot at 8th and Florida with spaces available for $150 / month.
