U STREET NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION
PRESS RELEASE

On Thursday, May 12, the U Street Neighborhood Association will host a Book Talk with author Blair Ruble on his new book, “Washington’s U Street: A Biography.” The book talk will take place 7-7:30 pm, just prior to the regular monthly meeting of the U Street Neighborhood Association, at the Thurgood Marshall Center, 1816 12th Street, NW. Neighbors are encouraged to remain for the neighborhood association meeting. The free event is open to the public, however donations will be accepted.

“We’re very proud and excited to host Mr. Ruble for this Book Talk about “Washington’s U Street: A Biography,” said Christine Szathmary, president of U Street Neighborhood Association. “The history and stories of U Street demand deep respect from all of us, and together, they continue to draw people every day and every night. This opportunity to enjoy a discussion directly with Mr. Ruble about U Street is one not to be missed.”

“Washington’s U Street: A Biography,” already the recipient of praise and great reviews, traces the history of the U Street neighborhood in Washington, D.C., from its Civil War era origins to its recent gentrification. Home throughout the years to important scholars, entertainers, and political figures, as well as to historically prominent African American institutions, Washington’s Greater U Street neighborhood is a critical zone of contact between black and white America. Howard University and the Howard Theater are both located there; Duke Ellington grew up in the neighborhood; and diplomat Ralph Bunche, Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, and medical researcher Charles Drew were all members of the community.

For additional information about the Book Talk or the U Street Neighborhood Association, please contact Jon Kardon, Vice President of the U Street Neighborhood Association at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 202-302-3665.
