The 14th Street NW Corridor Transportation Study will rely heavily on public participation. The public involvement process will include residents, ANCs and other stakeholders in and around the study area, and will help the Study Team document the community's concerns and recommendations. In addition, the public will have an opportunity to review and comment upon all Study findings and recommendations, thus playing a crucial role in the decision making process.

The focus of the study is 14th Street, NW from Thomas Circle to Florida Avenue.  You can view a map of the study area here .

The first public meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 20th, 2007, 6:00-8:00 PM, at the Source Theater, 1835 14th St. NW

The goal of this study is to develop a multi-modal transportation and streetscape design that:
  • preserves, strengthens and creates a vibrant commercial and residential corridor;
  • improves the efficiency of movement through the neighborhood commercial center and regional transportation system; improves the safety and mobility;
  • and is consistent with current and future development plans in the area.
There will be four public meetings. The first will outline the project, discuss existing conditions, and develop a shared vision of the future of the corridor. The second public meeting will focus on potential options in transportation and streetscape design, both short- and long-term, to achieve the shared vision of the corridor. The participants will be engaged to express their preferences for a variety of options. The third public meeting will discuss draft findings and recommendations, while the fourth public meeting will present the final report of the study, including final recommendations.

A balanced physical design and management strategies will be recommended to achieve the following objectives:
  •  To reinforce and define a sense of place and uniqueness of 14th Street and the Logan Circle/Shaw neighborhood through a well designed streetscape;
  • To recognize the role of the roadways, transit linkages, and bike and pedestrian pathways within the study area as an integral component in the overall city and regional transportation system and maintain or improve their function and efficiency as a part of the system;
  • To investigate and balance safe and efficient pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and auto movement through and within the study area;
  • To establish a flexible, demand-management based parking strategy and implementation plan to support new and existing retail and residential uses;
  • To explicitly encourage the use of transit and enhance transit efficiency,
  • To create a safe, inviting and interesting neighborhood that supports diverse uses and activities, and;To reinforce the intersection of 14th Street and U Street as an activity hub.
