New Sidewalks Coming to Florida Avenue Print E-mail
Written by CSNA & DDOT
ImageThe District Department of Transportation (DDOT) advises residents and motorists that sidewalk improvements began yesterday along the 1300 block of Florida Avenue, NW between 13th and 14th Streets. The work is slated to be completed by the end of August. Work will consist of installing new brick sidewalks.

In addition, roadway restoration will be taking place on Barry Place, NW, between Sherman Avenue and Georgia Avenue. This work will begin on or about July 30, 2007 and will be completed by the end of August, weather permitting.

This project will consist of the repairing the sidewalk, gutter, driveway ramps, and resetting of curb where necessary. DDOT construction crews on Barry Place will also mill and resurface the existing roadway.

The work on both projects will take place between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday (Saturday work possible). At all times during construction at least one lane in both directions will remain open for use and access to the adjacent homes and businesses will be maintained.

DDOT thanks residents and motorists for their patience and reminds both to be safe and to stay alert while traversing the work zone.

A New Plan for 14th Street Print E-mail
Written by U Street Neighborhood Association
ImageThe 14th Street NW Corridor Transportation Study will rely heavily on public participation. The public involvement process will include residents, ANCs and other stakeholders in and around the study area, and will help the Study Team document the community's concerns and recommendations. In addition, the public will have an opportunity to review and comment upon all Study findings and recommendations, thus playing a crucial role in the decision making process.

The focus of the study is 14th Street, NW from Thomas Circle to Florida Avenue.  You can view a map of the study area here

The first public meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 20th, 2007, 6:00-8:00 PM, at the Source Theater, 1835 14th St. NW

The goal of this study is to develop a multi-modal transportation and streetscape design that:
  • preserves, strengthens and creates a vibrant commercial and residential corridor;
  • improves the efficiency of movement through the neighborhood commercial center and regional transportation system; improves the safety and mobility;
  • and is consistent with current and future development plans in the area.
There will be four public meetings. The first will outline the project, discuss existing conditions, and develop a shared vision of the future of the corridor. The second public meeting will focus on potential options in transportation and streetscape design, both short- and long-term, to achieve the shared vision of the corridor. The participants will be engaged to express their preferences for a variety of options. The third public meeting will discuss draft findings and recommendations, while the fourth public meeting will present the final report of the study, including final recommendations.

DDOT Launches Pedestrian Master Plan Print E-mail
Written by CSNA & DDOT

ImageThe District Department of Transportation (DDOT) today announced the launch of the first District of Columbia Pedestrian Master Plan. The plan is part of a process that will examine all aspects of the District's pedestrian environment - from policies to design guidelines to specific safety improvements in some of the city's highest pedestrian crash corridors.

The plan is due to be completed in October 2007 and currently DDOT and its partners are seeking public input through focus groups, an online survey and a citywide meeting. Last year, 17 pedestrians were struck and killed in the District. In 2005, 16 pedestrians were struck and killed.

Every day the District of Columbia becomes more of a walking city," said Emeka Moneme, acting Director of DDOT. "But as it becomes more of a walking city our goal is to make it safer and more walkable by improving sidewalks, roadway crossings and the quality of life for pedestrians. This plan will be a team effort and we're looking forward to working on it."
