![]() U Street Hotel, view from 13th and U The proposed project would replace the existing building at this corner, which houses Rite Aid, BB&T bank, Pizza Hut, and other businesses. JBG is seeking to build an approximate four-star boutique hotel, which at a proposed 110-feet high, could include 250 guestrooms, 4,500 square feet of meeting space, and 25,000 square feet of retail. At this time, Rite Aid and BB&T would remain tenants in the new building. Questions were taken from CSNA members and others regarding concerns of the significant impact that this development would have on U Street and the surrounding neighborhood. Community concerns include the appropriateness of the proposed height, traffic and parking management, alley access, and relationship of the building in context with the Greater U Street Historic District. Additional details on the questions/answers will be available in the March 2009 CSNA meeting minutes. Another write-up of the meeting is offered by DC real estate digest/blog, DC MUD. JBG is seeking to develop this project through the District's "Planned Unit Development" (PUD) process, which requires public involvement. JBG's tentative plans as of March 2009 is to submit a PUD application to the DC government in summer 2009. Pending approvals, construction would begin in late 2011; with the hotel opening in 2014. CSNA will collect information from the neighborhood, JBG, the DC government, and others, and make it available on the CSNA U Street Hotel project page: ustreethotel.csnadc.org . ![]() U Street Hotel, view from rear alley There were a number of requests for JBG to provide additional information, renderings, and images to CSNA.
