Present at the meeting from Third District MPD were: Lt. Jova, Marco Santiago, MPO Wilson, Sgt. Jackson, and another MPD officer; John DeTaye from Councilmember Graham’s office; a representative from Nightclub 9:30; Luella Johnson from CSOSA; Myla Moss, ANC 1B01; Brian Card, CSNA Public Safety Chair, and other residents. Lt. Jova reported that we have had an increase in robberies (robbery with & without gun). Lt Jova provided a crime statistics report comparing all types of crime for the current thirty days with the past thirty days. For the time period April 4th – May 4th there were 15 robberies without gun (previous 30 days was 6); 10 robberies with gun (previous 30 days was 2); and overall crime was 113 incidents (previous 30 days was 70 incidents). May 2009 Crime Stats from MPD (PDF file) (563 KB) Specific areas of concern included 1400 block of W; 9th Street; 2200 block of Sherman; and 1100 Florida Ave). Many incidents occurring on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Many of the incidents have involved a band of 5 to 6 young men, Lt. Jova indicated that they are considering that some of these may be coming from Garfield Terrace (2200 block of 11th Street). On April 10th 2 juveniles were arrested. John DeTaye raised the question of how these youth could be targeted for intervention (such as jobs program). A request was made for more info on the arrest on April 10th arrest at Garfield Terrace. Lt Jova indicated that he is working with the Lt for PSA 304 (in which Garfield Terrace is in). Lt. Jova also indicated that he has plain clothes officers focusing on this. Lt. Jova also gave information on two recent incidents (April 25th at 1408 W St. – a shooting; and April 26 2204 14th St involving a stabbing with an intent to rob). Lt Jova also indicated that there were 9 burglaries during the past thirty days – occurring between 7 am – 11 am (Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday); and 3 pm – 7 pm (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday). There has been a spike in burglaries in LeDroit Park. Theft from autos also increased to 40 during the past 40 days (compared to 26 the previous 30 days). Thefts from autos mostly occurring Saturday (11 pm – 3 am) and Thursday evenings. Four areas targeted frequently include 1300 back of U St; 1200 Florida; 900 V St, and 1100 U St. Items stolen largely cameras, GPS, and other personal items. Myla Moss raised a concern about an incident involving 2 woman fighting coming out of the Lodge. Also discussed were a robbery at 600 block of U St. at about 2 am; and 6th & T drug sales. It was discussed that two of 9th Street liquor store operators are hiring reimbursable details (1909 9th St and Boston Liquors). John DeTaye mentioned that Councilmember Graham was attempting to allocate $1 million for reimbursable details for the whole city in the ABRA budget. Representative from the 930 asked if there had been any paintball incidents in the area, said that folks outside of the 930 club were shot outside of the club after closing with a paintball gun. Lt Jova discussed some of the expanded foot beats involving 17 footbeat officers in three different tours. Tours include 14th & W; 1800-2100 block of 14th St; 900-1300 block of U St; and 1800-1900 block of 8th & 9th St. It was also discussed that Howard Commencement was the following Saturday, as well as there would be three nights of taping of Martin Lawrence at the Lincoln Theatre. There was also discussion on the new statute which requires valet parking not to use street parking. Additionally it was discussed about the idea of using the Housing Finance Agency (9th & U) parking lot to alleviate parking issue, Councilmember Graham is exploring this idea.
