March 27: Earth Hour! Join the DC Green Connection and millions of others around the world taking symbolic action on climate change by turning the lights off for one hour on Saturday, March 27 at 8:30pm (local time). Earth Hour is organized by the World Wildlife Fund. It began in Sydney in 2007 with 2 million people switching off their lights. In 2008, more than 50 million people, along with hotels and iconic buildings in major cities around the globe, participated. In 2009, hundreds of millions of people and over 4000 cities in 88 countries joined in! Are you ready to take action? Sign up for Earth Hour today! April 22: Celebrate Earth Day! This year marks the 40th anniversary of a day symbolizing the start of an environmental movement that we call the green revolution today. An earlier generation dared to speak up for change and paved the green path for us under the leadership of Senator Gaylord Nelson (WI), founder of Earth Day. This generation included my own father who founded the United New Conservationists in Berkeley in the late 60’s, a coalition of Bay area environmental groups who together push for passage of the first Earth Day. (Go Dad!) Let’s resurrect that energy and make this year the biggest ever! Participate in a “Billion Acts of Green” or check out the Earth Day Network site for a schedule of events near you. (Including: Green Service Days April 16&17 and celebrations/rallies on the Mall on April 22). |
