Lights On Once Again for U Street Hotel Project?

During the winter of 2008 and the spring and summer of 2009, the U Street Neighborhood Association led community review sessions and discussion with the JBG Companies about their proposed U Street Hotel project at 13th and U Streets, NW.

However, after much neighborhood discussion, in May 2009, the DC Historic Preservation Office (HPO) notified the USNA, that after discussion between The JBG Companies and HPO, and in consideration of concerns expressed by USNA the project would not be reviewed by the DC Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB), and development of the project stalled.

Recent coverage by DC real estate blog, DCmud, and local LGBTQ newspaper, the Washington Bladeindicate that development and planning of the U Street Hotel project may be well underway once again.

According to the Washington Blade , current tenants in the existing building are being informed by the landlord, JBG Properties, that they can no longer renew leases of tenants along the 1300 block of U Street beyond June 2012.

As last presented to the neighborhood, JBG is seeking to build an approximate four-star boutique hotel, which at a proposed 103-feet high (87 feet from curb to parapet) could include 239 guestrooms, 4,500 square feet of meeting space, and 25,000 square feet of retail.

USNA continues to collect information from the neighborhood, JBG, the DC government, and others, and make it available on this U Street Hotel project page: ustreethotel.ustreet-dc.org .  If you are interested in being part of U Street Neighborhood Association's effort on this project, please contact the Chair of the Historic Preservation and Development Committee at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The proposed project is to develop a new "U Street Hotel" at the corner of 13th and U Street, NW, replacing the existing building at this corner, commonly known as the "Rite Aid Building".  As last presented to the community, the hotel project would replace the existing building at this corner, which houses Rite Aid, BB&T bank, Pizza Hut, and other businesses.

JBG has also acquired the Atlantic Plumbing site at 2112 8th Street, just east of the 9:30 Club, and the lot at 945 Florida Avenue NW.  Additional coverage is on Washington City Paper's Housing Complex blog.
