
Thursday, May 10 General Meeting Information
U Street Neighborhood Association will have its general meeting on May 10, 2012 at the Third District Pollce Station community room at 7 pm. DDOT will give updates on the U Street streetscape. The office of Planning will be providing an overview of the PUD process. JBG will be providing updates and describe the variances they are requesting for the project at Florida/8th Street. Hiba Abdallah will be presenting on a facility planned to be built at 9th/S St NW for individuals aging out of the foster care system. Also Zahir Rahimi (owner of Mila 2015 14th St) will describe his desire to change this clothing store to a restaurant. We will also be discussing the U Street Neighborhood Harrison Recreation Center film series starting in May.

The U Street Neighborhood Association Public Safety Committee provides summaries of the monthly PSA 305 meetings. The PSA 305 meeting on October 4, 2011 was attended by representatives from city agencies and community groups including:

• U.S. Attorney's Office: no representation
• CSOSA: Mr. Joseph Alston
• Howard University Police: no representation
• ANC 1B: no representation
• Mayor's Office of Community Relations and Services: no representation
• Councilmember Graham's Office: Ethan Arnheim, Media and Communications Director
• LeDroit Park Civic Association: Jana Baldwin
• Westminster Neighborhood Association: no representation
• U Street Neighborhood Association: Sushupta Sudarshan
• 9:30 Club – Karim Karefa-Smart
During the meeting, the following current crime issues and follow-up items from previous meetings were discussed:
• Lt. Jova provided the current statistics, as shown below.
• Although crime is down overall, robberies have increased. Most of the robberies do not involve a gun, but they do involve force and violence. Most of the robbery victims were white women speaking on iPhones. There was also a brutal attack on a construction worker early in the morning in front of the Howard Theater. The suspects are typically 17-21 years old and they are on bikes.
• Lt. Jova noted that his focus areas in PSA 305 are U St and the 7th and T St area.
• Officer Larry Garrett spoke of arrests involving prescription drugs at the 1900 block of 8th St.
• There was a discussion of the Flea Market at 9th and U St and criminal issues that seem to relate to the Flea Market.
• Joe Alston of CSOSA introduced himself to the group. He will be involved in following up on CSOSA PSA 305 issues.
• There was a discussion of coordinating the efforts of DYRS and MPD.
• Ethan Arnheim mentioned that CM Graham was planning a roundtable discussion regarding DYRS.
• Although CM Graham reportedly had a meeting regarding the issue of reimburseable details on the 1900 block of 9th St, there has been no resolution.
• There were no updates on the issue of crime relating to the Lincoln Westmoreland complex.
